What does the Islamic tradition say about our relationship to the earth, to agriculture and animals, to economics and diverse societies? In what ways does this differ or overlap with contemporary modern and post-modern answers to these questions? What might the Islamic tradition have to say about the frameworks of capitalism, communism, neo-liberalism, the green movement etc? How can Muslims who are interested in having a positive impact on the world bring the ethical, philosophical, cosmological, and epistemological sensibilities of Islam to life in thier practical engagements with the world? In this course students will be introduced to the Program for Ethical, Appropriate and Regenerative Livelihoods (PEARL) and the framework of the Islamic Gift Economy (IGE). The purpose of this course is to bring the Worldview of Islam to bear constructively and systematically upon all aspects of the socio-economic domain of life. What examples are some examples of ethical and regenerative projects and communities in the past and present. Though its main target audience is Muslims, aspects of the IGE framework have been presented to non-Muslims in many interreligious dialogues and conferences on reviving the Economy of Life, especially ecumenical conferences hosted by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the World Council of Churches (WCC). The Program for Ethical, Appropriate & Regenerative Livelihoods (PEARL) provides a platform for capacity-building, education, and research in the deployment and implementation of the Islamic Gift Economy (IGE) and similar regenerative socioeconomies based on Permaculture Design. PEARL seeks to raise the profile of the IGE framework and Social Permaculture within a multifaceted strategic approach. When: This class will gather Thursday evenings from 7-9pm.
