It is time for pilots to stand up for ourselves. We have huge responsibility on our shoulders every day of our working lives, but our profession is also under attack from all directions such as a misplaced belief that computers can do our job for us, the view that pilots are merely a balance sheet liability rather than a deep pool of experience and skills to be drawn on, and from the negative stereotypes that we often don’t do enough to counter. At the 2014 BALPA Annual Conference we did things differently. Our focus was on how we can unite and stand up for our profession. And here’s how our members helped. Watch their personal testimonies. Find out what is frustrating about being a pilot today? What makes our members proud to be a pilot? What does the profession need to do differently? How can we rebuild unity across the piloting profession? In short, we asked our members to finish the sentence: “I am a pilot and….” What came next? Was it fatigue? Was it trust? Was it sadness at the way young people in our industry are being treated?
