Though their relationship is strained by his frequent travelling and the inherent risks of the job, he's unwilling to give up his profession as he feels that it's his duty to help those in danger. The situation reaches breaking point when Dean is unable to return on time from a trip, and one evening, lonely Elena gets talking with handsome Damon Salvatore at the Grill. His reckless charm leaves her spellbound, and she gives in to her desire... ...and then Dean returns, promising Elena that he'll give their relationship more time and attention. She agrees because she still loves him, though she doesn't tell him about her tryst with Damon. Instead, she informs Damon of her decision, but Dean sees them together, and realises that something's going on between them. He looks into Damon's background, and is shocked to discover that he's a vampire... possibly related to many local deaths and attacks over the past century and a half. Dean confronts Elena, but she doesn't want him to hunt down Damon. However, Dean isn't willing to let Damon go given the obvious danger he poses to people. He breaks into the boarding house, and finds a stash of blood bank packs that indicate that Damon may not be the killer vampire after all. But even as he decides what to do, Elena warns Damon of Dean's plan, leading to a fatal confrontation... Enigma's 'Mea Culpa', literally meaning 'My Mistake / I'm Guilty', sets the background score for Elena's conflict: her love for two men with diametrically different intents and destinies, and the consequences of her indiscretions.
