While Rockhounding Arizona's Burro Creek, we are faced with the challenge of identifying rocks. In particular, are we finding Agate or Chert? We take our finds to the "Labooratory" and do some rock identification testing and have a deep dive discussion on Silica based Chalcedony, Agate, Jasper, and Chert. The use of these terms is a hotly debated topic where even the experts of experts do not always agree. We hope this video helps explain the similarities and differences amongst the silica based family of rocks, and helps shed some light on the sometimes murky area of rock identification. Some of the testing we performed included: Hydrochloric acid, Hardness Testing, the use of a Digital Microscope, and the good old fashion use of the senses of sight and touch. Burro Creek is an amazing area to rockhound. Regardless of which camp you may find yourself in the agate vs chert debate, Burro Creek offers a wonderland of variety for rockhounds to enjoy.
