Global Solutions Summit 2024 - Bridging Business and Biodiversity

Biodiversity is our strongest natural defense against climate change, mitigating emissions, and achieving climate resilience. Despite this, it is severely under threat in many places around the world. At the UN Convention on Biological Diversity COP15 in Montreal in December 2022, all countries agreed on a historic deal to protect and restore biodiversity. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework outlines clear and measurable targets, including the restoration of 30% of degraded ecosystems globally and the conservation of 30% of land and water by 2030. In the run-up to the next COP, all countries are required to update their national strategies and action plans. At the same time, companies are starting to act on the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). Before the next COP in October 2024, all countries need to develop updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Actions Plans and National Biodiversity Finance Strategies. At the same time, more and more companies have started to monitor and act on their risks, dependencies, and impact on biodiversity. Notably, at the World Economic Forum in January 2024, 320 organizations committed to start making nature-related disclosures part of their annual reporting. With 6 months to go until COP16, this session will bring together public and private sector actors to discuss progress and hurdles in the implementation of biodiversity protection targets. And specifically ask what needs to be done to accelerate progress at a macro level while creating effective frameworks and incentives for business action on biodiversity? How can metrics in both national and corporate arenas be harmonized so governments and businesses are pulling in the same direction?
