Hey everyone, welcome back to Freedom Champagne! If you're traveling Cancun off resorts and want to explore the real Cancun-and save a ton of money while you're at it-you're in the right place. Today, I'm sharing 7 tried-and-tested tips for traveling off Cancun resorts, living like a local, and having an incredible Cancun adventure on a budget. Let's get started! 00:00 Introduction 00:49 Book an AirBnb 01:36 Take the Local Bus 02:20 Free Public Beaches 03:21 Walk Around 04:08 Local Grocery Shopping in Cancun 05:44 Visit Downtown 08:09 Local Festivals Tip 1 - Book an Airbnb! Airbnb's are great alternatives to staying in all inclusive resorts as they allow you to travel Cancun on a budget. We booked an apartment in the hotel zone near the public beaches of playa torgugas. There's pros and cons of staying in the hotel zone versus downtown. For example, the hotel zone is where the public beach's are. It's also quieter, but restaurants are more expensive here. While in the downtown area, it's more cultural, more affordable for dinning out. Everything there is also walking distance. As where we are in the hotel zone we walk about 30 minutes to get to a grocery store or restaurants. We don't mind the walk and prefer to be on the beach side of things and not in the busy downtown Our Airbnb for a month in Feb 2025 http://bit.ly/41cYTTC- Tip 2 Take the Bus Secondly, when traveling in Cancun, Mexico ditch the taxis and take the bus! Cancun's buses are super frequent, reliable, and incredibly budget-friendly. For just 12 pesos-yes, that's less than a dollar-you can jump on a bus and travel between the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun. Tip 3 Visit Local Public Beaches My third tip is to spend time at local public beaches. You don't have to splurge on resorts to enjoy Cancun's stunning coastline. Playa Langosta is hands-down my favorite. It's calm, perfect for families or just relaxing, and you've got everything you need nearby-ice cream stands, a convenience store, free parking, showers, bathrooms, and even a beachfront restaurant. Tip 4 Walk Around Walk everywhere you can! If you're staying in the Hotel Zone like we did, there's a great paved bike path that's perfect for strolling with strollers or wagons. It's a wonderful way to take in the scenery." Tip 5 - Shop at Local Grocery Stores Next up, skip the tourist traps and shop at local grocery stores. While we opted to walk everywhere, Uber functions in Cancun and there's plenty of taxis. So you can take an uber to a grocery store. Our local grocery store was about a 30 minute walk and was a great way to save money and experience everyday life here. Prices are reasonable and of course the supermarket is filled with fresh fruit and vegetables. Tip 6 Visit Downtown This brings me to tip #6-visit downtown Cancun! Downtown is packed with restaurants, shops, and markets. My favorite spot is Parque de las Palapas. When visiting Cancun with kids, don't miss out this public park. There's food, two playgrounds for kids, and tons of activities in the evening, perfect for families or anyone looking for some lively, local vibes." Tip 7 Check Out Local Festivals My final tip? Keep an eye out for local events and festivals. We stumbled upon the Cancun Carnival here at Parque de las Palapas, and wow-it was an amazing experience! There was live entertainment, activities for kids, and, of course, delicious local food at affordable prices. It's an unforgettable way to connect with the culture.
