(21 Nov 1995) T/I: 10:40:34 In the run-up to Russia's parliamentary elections in December, politicians are displaying "skills" more often associated with western democracies, especially the United States. "Mudslinging," for example, is now common - as are straightforward insults. The head of the Party of Economic Freedom, businessman Konstantin Borovoi, was last week reprimanded by a special media court for his televised commercial called "Kostya Borovoi's Chastushki." The chastushki, a rhyming folk song often earthy or off-colour, contained quite unflattering references to Borovoi's main competitor, Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. In his commercials, the head of the Forward Russia movement, Boris Fyodorov, calls his competitors "liars" and "incompetents." In a third instance, the Forward Russia Party referred to Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov in a large billboard reading "Fifty million victims of the civil war, collectivisation and repression would not vote for Zyuganov. Zyuganov believes voters are more likely to accept what he calls "the civilised and non-hysterical campaign of the Russian communists."
