SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President: "The fight against anti-Semitism is the fight of every French person because we cannot erase French Jews from the family photo of the Republic. Because when a Jew is in danger in the homeland, it is the homeland itself that is in danger. I want there to be no doubt about that here today." 3. Audience listening 4. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President: "To combat the poison of online hate, France will solemnly demand accountability from major platforms and measurable results in the swift removal of hateful content. If commitments are not met, we will invoke European law, which provides for significant fines, and I have contacted the President of the European Commission to this effect. Whether certain powers who would like to lecture us like it or not, in the France of the Enlightenment, free speech stops at antisemitism and racism. We will demand accountability and results." 3. Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron, Anne-Laure Abitbol and her two sons standing by tree during French national anthem, zoom in STORYLINE: French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute in Paris on Friday to the memory of a young Frenchman who was the victim of an anti-Semitic crime twenty years ago and to all victims of anti-Semitism. Ilan Halimi was found naked, handcuffed and covered with burn marks near railroad tracks in the Essonne region, south of Paris, on February 13, 2006. He died on the way to the hospital after being held captive and tortured for more than three weeks. He was 23. The brutal killing revived worries in France about antisemitism and led to deep anxiety in France’s Jewish community, the largest in western Europe. During a speech for the occasion, Macron announced that “France will solemnly demand accountability from major (online) platforms and measurable results in the swift removal of hateful content.” “Whether certain powers who would like to lecture us like it or not, in the France of the Enlightenment, free speech stops at antisemitism and racism. We will demand accountability and results" he said. An oak tree was planted in the garden of the Elysee Palace in Ilan Halimi’s memory, marking the “entrenchment of Ilan Halimi’s memory in the Republic and its protection by the Presidency” the Elysee explained in a statement. Ilan Halimi's sister Anne-Laure Abitbol and her two sons attended the ceremony, along Macron's wife Brigitte.
