While pregnant with her third child, Becky Gehringer began having chest pain. She knew something wasn't right and came back to her hometown of Omaha, Neb. for a weekend visit. Scans showed a spot on Becky's lung and she made her way to Nebraska Medicine where she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of synovial sarcoma. At five months pregnant, Becky needed part of her lower lung removed. She started chemotherapy while she was pregnant, and delivered baby Ethan five weeks early. After the birth, Becky continued chemo and got rid of the tumor. Eight months later, one of her routine scans came back positive that she had another tumor on the other side, just above her kidney. This past spring, the cancer returned again. "If cancer provides you with one thing, it's a survivorship. People come out of the woodwork, people that you may have only known as an acquaintance, just start helping." Right now, because there aren't any tumors showing, Becky receives CT scans every three months that shows if anything is growing. As a three-time cancer survivor, Becky says, "the mental part of cancer is just as difficult as the physical part. I want people to know that this will not be your end. You have options."
