On January 22, 2025, at approximately 1:40 pm, I assisted the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office on a traffic stop near Highway 71 and Planters Rd. While at the traffic stop, the car the Deputies had stopped fled from the location. I proceeded in behind the car as it drove northbound into Fort Smith. With my emergency lights and siren on, the vehicle continued into Fort Smith. The driver can be seen swerving as I attempted a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) to stop the pursuit. Now, in Fort Smith, the driver drove through intersections at a high rate of speed, disregarded red lights, and was driving in a very reckless manner. We then turned off Towson Ave. and into an apartment complex located near 5121 Towson Ave. Driving into a large field, the driver of the vehicle made a wide swooping turn, leaving me the opportunity to hit the passenger side rear wheel in hopes of disabling the car. After hitting the car, I had to continue pushing the vehicle sideways as the driver continued to accelerate in a circle. Cpl. Price, who was following in behind me, was able to place his patrol car in a pinning position and overall stopping the car. The driver continued to hit the accelerator, and I could hear the motor of the car rev as we were outside of our patrol cars. Giving the driver of the car commands to get out of the car, it was obvious that the driver wasn’t going to comply with our commands. Cpl. Price deployed his K-9 Rick in the window of the car. I could see from the passenger side of the car that the driver had a knife clipped to his front right pocket and appeared to be reaching for this knife. I busted the passenger window of the car and struck the subject in the upper extremities in an attempt to get compliance from the driver and avoid him possibly using the knife on another Officer. The driver of the car was finally removed and placed into custody after another brief physical struggle on the ground. EMS personnel were dispatched to our location to render the driver medical attention. The driver of the vehicle was identified and confirmed as David A. Bruce. David was taken to Baptist Hospital in Fort Smith and given further medical attention. After David was cleared from the hospital, he was transported to the Sebastian County Detention Center and Booked on the charges of: 27-50-302(a)(7): SPEEDING - MORE THAN 15 MPH OVER LIMIT 27-50-302(a)(2): RECKLESS DRIVING 27-52-107: FAIL TO STOP AT RED LIGHT 27-37-702: NO SEATBELT 5-54-125(d)(1): FLEEING - VEHICLE OR CONVEYANCE 5-54-103(a): RESISTING ARREST 5-13-202.
