Stabilization of your bunionectomy procedure is paramount to a successful result. We prefer maintaining correction until most of the swelling post operatively resolves. Swelling post operatively weakens capsular structures so maintaining position after surgery is important. Just as you would stabilize and ankle injury while the ankle ligaments are position to heal. As you have seen in my previous video I use this taping technique preoperative to reduce joint pain, prevent pressure to the second toe and reduce progression of the deformity as the patient waits for surgery. We prefer nonabsorbent skin sutures to reduce risk of suture reaction making the incision heal cosmetically better. Always reinforced with steri-strips until we advance to the silicon tape or later silicon creams. Above all the boney correction has to be perfect to obtain the desired functional, cosmetic result. It will prevent recurrence a well. In a future video will see surgeons that elect to perform procedures that have quicker recovery but do not improve intermetatarsal angle resulting in recurrence within a year or two. Horrible when a patient has to go through this again! Alignment must be anatomically straight on the operating table, it will not improve post operatively. The taping reduces stress on the soft tissues as they reposition themselves into the new position rapidly allowing mobilization of the joint but also protecting the osteotomies when taping done correctly.
