Abstract The asymmetry in global geo-strategic relations has for long been mirrored by an asymmetry in the production of knowledge via the media. As a result, most Asians have learnt about other parts of Asia via the western media, with implications for both their self-understanding and that of the larger context, Asia, within which they are located. Pallavi Aiyar will talk about her experiences covering China and Indonesia from an Indian perspective, touching upon the parallels and differences between these large, populous nations that are all in the midst of defining their versions of modernity and "progress". About the Speaker Pallavi Aiyar is a Mandarin-speaking, award winning, journalist and author. She has worked as a foreign correspondent for The Hindu, Business Standard and other leading Indian newspapers for over a decade, reporting from Beijing, Brussels and Jakarta.
