Brief History of Lonpo Tashi Norbu Bagdar Skyabs is said to have settled in Wanla around the year 11th Century. Fascinated by beautiful valley having pure water and lash green trees, he decided to build his residence in Wanla. Seeing Rinchen Zangpo’s founding of monasteries in Alchi, Mangyu and Sumdha in Sham in Lower Ladakh, he started build his castle in Saspol village. He is also said to have travelled to Kashmir with Lama Lotsava Rinchen Zangpo. During the time, upper Ladakh was ruled by Gyapa Cho and Lower Ladakh by Chow Bagdar Skyabs. In 15th Century Lonpo Tashi Norbu, a descendent of Bagdan Skyabs became Lonpo of Wanla. He was proven very brave warrior and miraculous among the other ministers of his time. This led the other ministers felt enmity to him. Once when a council (of ministers) was held in the grand assemble hall of Leh Palace, no seat was reserved for Wanle Lonpo. Feeling dismayed, he took out his personal swords and stroked it into the pillar of hall and created a seat for himself. It is said that he could even travel from Wanla to Leh in a single day in those days. He was married to Yangchan, a daughter of Dhomkar Lonpo. Later, king of Ladakh following some instigation and provocation made by some villagers put him under house arrest and latertook him to Skuru, Nubra where he was put to death, but before that he made his last testament saying he would not take rebirth for five hundred years but would appear in the oracle form for the wellbeing of all beings. Since then, the tradition of appearing Wanla Lonpo into an oracular form continuous till date as per the wishes of His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche, the oracular form of the Lonpo appears in peaceful forms.
