K. Leung, PhD; David Traylor There is a lack of published, peer-reviewed empirical research on all aspects of cannabis agriculture, which is already a multi-billion-dollar industry in the United States despite still being listed as a Schedule 1 drug by the federal government. While the long-term effects of cannabis cultivation on the environment are unknown, well-designed studies that capture the emerging human-environmental impact can directly inform land-use policy and state environmental regulations to reduce growing threats to air and water quality as well as energy consumption. Limited studies have documented the environmental impact of cannabis cultivation and production but it has been challenging because of cannabis’ federal status, leaving it to cannabis complicit states to step up. This panel will examine the environmental cost of growing cannabis intensively indoors and outdoors as well as the spent biomass that is being left behind.
