In today's episode, you'll learn about possibly the most fascinating apocryphal gospel of all: THE GOSPEL OF THOMAS. Unlike other texts, this one does not present a biography or a narrative about the life of Christ. Instead, it offers a compilation of sayings attributed to Jesus, as if it were a record of his words, intended, perhaps, to serve as the basis for constructing a complete gospel, adding these teachings to the chronological events of his life and work. If you are a gospel scholar or enthusiast, you've probably heard of the so-called "Q" source. The term "Q," which refers to a hypothetical text used as a basis by the authors of the canonical gospels, comes from the German Quelle, meaning "source." This source is believed to be a compilation of Jesus' teachings, used as a reference for the Gospel of Mark and, later, those of Matthew and Luke. However, when we talk about the text discussed in this episode—the sayings of Jesus according to the Gospel of Thomas—the most widely accepted theory is that it does not correspond to the Q source. Even so, it is possible that the Q source, if it existed, was similar to the content of this gospel. Unlike the canonical gospels, the Gospel of Thomas does not address miracles, the resurrection, or historical events such as the crucifixion. Therefore, it can raise profound questions about the orthodoxy of virtually all Christian traditions, from the oldest, such as the Armenian and Catholic Churches, to the neo-Pentecostals. In this text, eternal life does not seem to be the result of Jesus' passion and death or the sacrifice of the lamb for the remission of sins. Instead, it depends on the individual's understanding of Christ's teachings—words that often seem to involve hidden, mysterious, and, why not, apocryphal meanings. Could paradise—eternal life—be hidden in Jesus' words? That's what we're going to explore in today's episode, as we begin our journey through the fascinating words of Christ according to the Gospel of Thomas.
