Sometimes life can feel overwhelming. The news cycle never stops, our phones rarely go quiet, and it can feel as though the world is asking more of us than we have to give. In moments like this, I often find myself looking to history for perspective — not because the past was easier, but because ordinary people have always had to find ways to cope. In this video, I explore 10 gentle ways to “cope well and carry on”, inspired in part by the wartime diaries of Nella Last. Nella was an ordinary woman living in Barrow-in-Furness who began writing for the Mass Observation project in 1939. Through her diaries she recorded the everyday emotional reality of living through the Second World War — the fear, the exhaustion, the small comforts, and the quiet resilience of simply continuing. Her words are deeply human, and surprisingly relevant today. Together we’ll talk about: • Keeping busy in meaningful, grounding ways • The difference between busyness and gentle distraction • Letting difficult thoughts “ride the train” away • Creativity as a form of emotional release • Finding calm in nature and stillness • Choosing humour when things feel heavy • Treating yourself with small comforts • Helpful coping aids and simple remedies • Maintaining daily rituals of normal life • Remembering that goodness still exists in the world These aren’t grand solutions — they’re small, human strategies. The kind that ordinary people have relied on for generations when life became too much. Sometimes resilience isn’t dramatic. Sometimes it’s simply putting the kettle on, opening the window to hear the birds, finishing the washing, and carrying on. I hope this video brings you a little calm and comfort today.
