[UPDATE: I recently tested out the MOVO Professional Windscreen against the hairy windscreen that the SSH-6 comes: • Movo's Professional Windscreen vs. Zoom's ... I also added some comparison footage of how the audio sounds using the Canon Built-in Mic vs. the SSH-6 Mic. ] As an amateur videographer, I decided to take the next level with my audio and get a microphone. I had bought a RODE microphone, as that was what everyone else seemed to have, but the one I received was a dud. My husband and I tried everything, but it simply didn't work and we returned it the next day. But from my experience with it, it felt flimsy, opening the battery compartment was difficult, and those suspension rubber bands were a pain. But the scariest thing about hooking up a mic to your DSLR is that if you forget to switch it on or your battery dies you have zero audio to go with your video. This actually happened to my twin when she was recording video at my sister's wedding! So, I decided to go with a portable digital recorder, the Zoom H5, mainly because I could fall back on Canon's built-in mic for the audio in case something happened to my recorder. https://www.zoom-na.com/products/fiel... recording/zoom-h5-handy-recorder http://amzn.com/B00KCXMBES It was only until I got to windy Kansas, I decided to splurge on Zoom's newest shotgun mic, the SSH-6. https://www.zoom-na.com/products/prod... http://amzn.com/B00SGDG8TU The SSH-6, unlike the SGH-6 Shotgun Mic, is a Stereo Mid-Side Shotgun Mic, which means it can pick up audio on the side, rather than just in front of it. I tested Zoom's SSH-6 against the X/Y Mic that came with my Zoom H5, as well as my Canon 60D's built-in mic. What I wanted to see was if the extra $150 was worth it. So far I'm undecided, which is why I'm postponing my SSH-6 review. I was disappointed that the wind, which was gusting up to 21 mph, affected the audio. I knew this would happen, but I thought because the SSH-6 had the dead cat, it'd fare better than the X/Y mic. But it seems like the SSH-6 picked up on the wind even more than the X/Y. This could because the dead cat that came with the SSH-6 is garbage. So before I conduct my final review, I have a "stuffed rabbit" on the way, which is a windscreen that has two layers of wind protection (foam and hairy) and I'll see if that does a better job against the Kansas wind. My thoughts so far on the SSH-6 is that from 2 meters away, it picked up the knife "thunks" very well. The the X/Y mic, on the other hand, sounded more like a damp "thud" rather than a metallic "thunk". And of course, both Zoom mics outshone Canon's built-in mic, in which its audio sounds...hollow and dull. As for being able to record the audio in raw and adjust the stereo depth afterwards, I'm not going to bother with it as that will just add more time to editing. If recording video or audio is just a hobby, then you shouldn't bother with the raw setting. Just keep in mind what the appropriate level the side mic should be at before recording. At a get-together? Bump the side mic up to +6. Knife throwing in your backyard? Turn the side mic completely off to get rid of any unwanted noises (like yappy neighbor dogs and lawn mowers). Hope that helps for now. I'll be posting a more in-depth review on the SSH-6 once I get my stuffed rabbit!
