Since its inception in the 1860s, Italy had great appetite, but rotten teeth, to steal a phrase from Bismarck. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Italy was sent careening into anarchy for the next thousand years. From the byzantine reconquest and lombard invasion creating permanent and visible north/south division, to the feudal carolingian kingdom being constantly unstable, and the subsequent decline of the Holy Roman Empire leaving the region dominated by city states and outside powers, Italy had a pretty bad hand when it was unified. The country would spend the next 80 years trying to claim a place in the sun, with attempted colonial expansion, wars against Austria, and even considering itself a rival to France, the Kingdom of Italy would struggle. But this of course begs the question - what if Italy was more successful, able to push for more with better outcomes? In short, what if history went perfectly for - i mean, what if Italy was a superpower?
