Palm Sunday marks Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem by donkey on the Sunday before his crucifixion. It marks the beginning of the Catholic Church''s most solemn period - the week that ends with Easter next Sunday. Processions of priests and bishops made their way from the Mount of Olives along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Priests and worshippers carried palm branches - as the crowd did to greet Jesus as he entered the holy city nearly two thousand years ago. The 800-year-old church is one of the most important Christian sites and is believed to be the site of Jesus'' crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Thousands of tourists and pilgrims who usually attend the event have been kept away this year by the continuing political crisis in Israel and Palestinian territories. Meanwhile, a Palestinian was shot and critically wounded by an Israeli border policeman in Bethlehem on Sunday. The incident followed a declaration on Thursday that militant Palestinian groups would support a de facto cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinians. Border police spokesman Oren Goanias said the Palestinian was shot after he attempted to steal a weapon from a border policeman at a checkpoint between Jerusalem and the nearby West Bank town of Bethlehem. Policemen later re-enacted before the cameras how the Palestinian allegedly tried to steal weapon. Goanias said the incident occurred during a routine border police check for illegal Palestinian workers attempting to enter Israel. Since the election of Mahmoud Abbas as Palestinian leader in January, Israeli-Palestinian violence has dropped sharply, with no fatalities so far registered during March.
