Whipple's disease was described by George Whipple in 1907 who originally called it intestinal lipodystrophy. It is caused by a bacterium called Tropheryma whipplei (previously whippelii). It affects white men much more frequently than women. It may affects small bowel most frequently but also colon and appendix.
