In this lecture, we discuss the Rickettsiales order of bacteria which includes the Rickettsia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia and Neorickettsia genera. These organisms have complex and interesting lifecycles which involve invertebrate vectors and vertebrate reservoirs which maintain the organism; the biology is complex and very interesting! The Rickettsiales are obligate intracellular parasites which introduces some diagnostic challenges (ex. they can't be cultured on agar plates). Organisms within this order cause some disease or historic and contemporary significance including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Typhus, canine monocytic and granulocytic ehrlichiosis, Salmon poisoning and Potomac horse fever. I'll cover the basic microbiological characteristics, taxonomy, virulence factors, common clinical presentations, sample collection and diagnostic strategies, zoonotic potential and treatment options for these organisms.
