Texas school shooting: World leaders, US lawmakers offer condolences and call for action

World leaders from Canada, the U.K., Mexico and Ukraine echoed words of condolence to those in Uvalde, Texas after a gunman killed at least 19 students and two teachers on Tuesday. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that "all of Canada grieves" after the latest mass shooting, and second-deadliest school shooting in the U.S. "The students, the parents, the teachers, the entire community — they've had their lives changed forever by this unimaginable event," he said Tuesday evening. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed his sadness for the loss, saying "absolutely innocent children being murdered in an absolutely peaceful time." U.S. lawmakers also offered their own condolences, but Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized his Republican colleagues, calling on them to put themselves in the shoes of the parents who lost their children "instead of in the arms of the NRA (National Rifle Association)," saying it might "let you wriggle free from the vice-like grip of the NRA." A bipartisan bill from the U.S. House of Representatives involving background checks for gun purchases has yet to pass the Senate.
