Political Map of India States and Union Territories: India is divided into 28 states and 8 Union Territories. Each state and Union Territory has its own capital. Capitals: Important to note the capitals of each state and Union Territory. Borders: India shares its borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It also has a maritime boundary with Sri Lanka. 2. Physical Map of India Mountain Ranges: The Himalayas in the north, the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats along the western and eastern coasts, and the Vindhya and Satpura ranges in central India. Rivers: Major rivers include the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna, and Cauvery. River basins are crucial for understanding water resources and agriculture. Deserts: The Thar Desert in the northwest. Plains: The Indo-Gangetic plain is one of the most fertile regions. Plateaus: The Deccan Plateau covers a large part of southern India. Coastlines: India has a long coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. 3. Climate Zones Tropical Wet: Western coast and northeastern regions. Tropical Dry: Central and southern parts. Subtropical Humid: Northern plains. Montane: Himalayan region. 4. Cultural and Economic Aspects Languages: India has 22 officially recognized languages. Hindi and English are widely used. Agriculture: Different regions grow different crops; for example, rice in the eastern and southern regions, wheat in the northern regions. Industries: Major industrial regions include Mumbai-Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, and the National Capital Region (Delhi). Mineral Resources: Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh are rich in minerals like coal, iron ore, and bauxite. 5. Transportation Networks Railways: One of the largest railway networks in the world, crucial for passenger and freight movement. Roads: National Highways, State Highways, and rural roads connect different parts of the country. Airports: Major international airports are located in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Kolkata. Ports: Major ports include Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, and Kochi. 6. Historical and Tourist Places Historical Monuments: Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Gateway of India. Pilgrimage Sites: Varanasi, Amritsar, Rishikesh, Tirupati, Mecca Masjid. Tourist Destinations: Goa, Kerala backwaters, Rajasthan forts and palaces, Himalayan hill stations like Shimla and Manali. 7. Natural Resources and Conservation Forests: Covering about 21% of the land area; significant in the Northeast, Western Ghats, and central India. Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks: Notable ones include Jim Corbett, Kaziranga, Ranthambore, and Sundarbans. Biosphere Reserves: Nilgiri, Nanda Devi, Sunderbans, and the Gulf of Mannar. 8. Administrative Divisions Districts: Each state is divided into districts for administrative purposes. Municipalities and Panchayats: Local governance is handled by urban municipalities and rural panchayats.
