Sri Gyanamata was a disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda, who founded the Self Realization Fellowship. Those who knew her said she was like a flower-tiny, frail, beautiful, always exuding the fragrance of Spirit. She constantly nurtured the quality of having the right attitude under all circumstances. If Yogananda asked to do something, she would say “yes” quickly. If it was something difficult, she decided she’d figure it out later, but for now she would say “yes,” and make it snappy. As a result, they have uplifted the lives of millions by conveying the thoughts of Jesus through the Self Realization Fellowship. She felt that life’s highest goal was to be in an unshakable harmonious union with God. If anything unpleasant happened she reminded herself that she’s here for “God Alone”. This was her life motto, and she hung it up above her bed. She says that we all incarnate here on this plane in order to learn certain lessons, and gain necessary experiences. We were born to endure these experiences. As a result, her prayer to God was “Change no circumstances of my life. Change me.” This is the way I am; this is the way I’ll be unless You help me.” In her life she endured 20 years of physical pain and suffering. But she maintained the attitude that the body belonged to God, and God could do what God wanted with it….and she would continue to do what she wanted, which was to love God no matter what. She said that just because we want things a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s the best thing for us. After all, without a little suffering in our life, we’d all be spiritual cream puffs. Our suffering can be a pathway to greatness, it’s where we learn and grow. And suffering keeps our ego from growing too big. Sister Gyanamata was a modern day saint, and we have the opportunity to trace her spiritual footsteps, and follow her attitudes on the spiritual path, so that we can know the meaning of life and the reality of God’s love.
