Hello everyone and peace! This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—and our Gospel draws our attention to Joseph’s role as protector and guardian. Once again, God speaks to Joseph through a dream, warning him of the danger posed by Herod. Trusting the angel’s message, Joseph acts immediately, taking Mary and the child Jesus to safety in Egypt, and later returning only when God reveals that it is safe to do so. This feast falls within the Christmas season, and the Gospel is best understood within the broader story of Jesus’ birth. In Matthew’s account, Joseph stands at the center of the infancy narrative, faithfully responding to God’s guidance. Matthew also emphasizes that Jesus fulfills the promises of the Old Testament, and the Holy Family’s journey into and out of Egypt echoes Israel’s story in the Exodus, particularly the experience of Moses. Although this Sunday’s Gospel passage omits the account of the massacre of the innocents—remembered on December 28—it remains an important part of the larger story. These events remind us that Jesus entered a world marked by fear, violence, and resistance to God’s plan.
