THE BOOK OF ACTS Acts 3:1-10 | Thrive Church Manchester | Pastor BJ Boosz "Healing At The Gate Beautiful" Big Idea: When you ask God for what you think you need, don’t be surprised when He gives you what you actually need! The Scene at the Beautiful Gate 1. Peter and John Go to Pray (v. 1) • Faithful Jews prayed three times a day: 9 AM, 12 PM, and 3 PM • Hundreds, if not thousands, gathered at the temple to pray together • Peter and John continued the spiritual disciplines they learned from Jesus 2. A Man Lame from Birth (vv. 2-3) • Lame from birth for over 40 years—carried daily to beg at the gate called Beautiful • The Beautiful Gate: 75 feet tall, made of Corinthian bronze, covered in gold and silver • He chose this gate because it had the most foot traffic 3. Peter Sees Him (vv. 4-5) • Most people averted their eyes and ignored him—for 40 years • Peter looked straight at him and said, “Look at us!” • The man’s face perked up—he expected money 4. What He Needed vs. What He Asked For (vv. 6-8) • “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you.” • Peter didn’t offer what the man expected—he offered what the man actually needed • Instantly healed, the man began walking, jumping, and praising God 5. The Response (vv. 9-10) • Everyone recognized him as the man who sat begging at the gate • They were filled with wonder and amazement • A transformed life becomes a testimony that points others to Jesus Key Takeaways 1. God gives you what you actually need, not always what you ask for • The lame man asked for money—God gave him legs • We often ask for temporary relief; God offers complete transformation • Pray like Jesus: “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42) 2. The rescuing hero of the Bible is always Jesus—and the one He rescues is us • We were born with a sin problem we couldn’t fix on our own • Like the lame man, we needed complete transformation from the inside out • When we give our lives to Jesus, we are a new creation Luke 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” Reflection Questions • What have I been asking God for that might not be what I actually need? • Do I see myself as the hero of my story, or do I recognize Jesus as my rescuer? • Is your life so refreshingly different that it’s attractive to those watching from the outside? “No longer do we say, silver and gold we do not have.” “Maybe that’s why we can no longer say, rise up and walk.” — Thomas Aquinas to Pope Innocent II Thrive Church CCL #253399 CCLI #20114324 www.thriveyork.com
