Find out more about the BCCIE International Education Awards at http://www.bccie.bc.ca/educators/awards Douglas College - Zambia Global Leadership Program The Zambia Global Leadership Program demonstrates how Campus Services can expand their role in co-curricular learning to help an institution achieve its internationalization goals. Currently most institutions focus on academic programs in their internationalization strategy but Student Services areas also have a mandate for student development in areas of leadership development, experiential learning and professional skills development. Developing these skills in a global context is increasingly important for students to become effective interculturally in Canada's highly diverse population. The Zambia Global Leadership Program was developed out of the Centre for Campus Life, and has centred its mission on providing the right blend of international work experience, comprehensive training, and links to academic learning to foster the development of passionate students into informed global citizens, resulting in much more than the standard international volunteer experience. Students spend the first three months preparing and in training, followed by challenging three month placements with Zambian non-profit organizations that are tightly linked to each student's academic and career path. The program, founded in 2010, is in its third year of operation and has developed partnerships with 16 Zambian host-organizations, the Zambian Ministry of Youth and Sport, the Ministry of Education and has involved 28 student participants.
