The Daimon Laboratory researches the design and evaluation of human interfaces. As information and communication technology advances, the relationship between people and information is becoming important for improving people's safety and peace of mind. Q. "In our lab, we research how to build systems that can support people in relation to transport. In particular, as automobiles are a typical form of transport, we're studying how to incorporate information and support devices into automobiles, and when next-generation vehicles appear, what sort of devices should be included in them." People can't easily process a lot of information at once, or do several tasks at the same time. And depending on the situation, what people pay attention to may change. Automobiles and next-generation transportation equipment need be designed based on such human cognitive characteristics such as recognition or judgement. In experiments with driving simulators, the Daimon Lab measures brainwaves and analyzes behavior, to find out what information users need, and when. Q. "In this simulation, we're studying people's visual field in which they can direct their attention. We display squares and triangles at random, and get people to press a button as soon as a shape is displayed. Then, we ask people whether they saw a square or a triangle. From the rate of correct responses with the button, we can measure the visual field where people can direct their attention. We can also determine the range in which people can recognize what kind of object they saw." Q. "Nowadays, there are various kinds of automobiles - electric vehicles and hybrids as well as gasoline-engine vehicles. But the situation is such that, in hilly areas and the provinces, elderly people can't easily use an automobile for their daily transportation. To support such seniors, and other people who can't use transportation easily, a group at Keio University is developing an electrically powered car that can be driven by one person automatically. In a project called "co-mobility", research is being conducted to develop new technology that will support the next generation of human transportation methods." Today's society is convenient, but not necessarily safe or carefree. Through these researches, the Daimon Lab aims to create infrastructure that makes society as a whole safer and more comfortable.
