One of the biggest questions facing communities like Charlottesville and Albemarle County is how to address the high cost of housing to make it more broadly accessible while allowing current residents to remain in their homes, and neighborhoods to maintain a sense of place. Dr. Karen Chapple from the University of Toronto spoke to us on “Belonging in Charlottesville: Effective Strategies to Prevent Displacement.” Dr. Chapple is the Director of the Urban Displacement Project, which aims to understand issues like displacement and exclusion and identify policies that support equitable development. This one hour discussions aimed to gain a deeper understanding of what the Charlottesville area can do better in this critically important area. We were also joined by Sarah Malpass from the Fifeville Neighborhood Association to learn more about the FNA and some of the city’s anti-displacement efforts.
