(11 Feb 2009) HEADLINE: Bank CEOs try soothing Congress CAPTION: The heads of eight big banks told members of Congress they feel the public's pain stemming from the financial meltdown and are making changes, as the AP's Mark Hamrick reports. (Feb. 11) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Words of contrition coming from humbled men of industry... Both members of Congress and big bank CEOs acknowledged public anger about use of taxpayer funds. and at least one lawmaker found the change in attitude hard to take.. (GRAPHIC Rep. Michael Capuano, D-Mass.) (at 2:15...girl scout cookies, bicycles, etc) Congresswoman Maxine Waters said taxpayers see a disconnect, between the government money spent and the continued credit logjam still choking the economy. (GRAPHIC Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.) At 10:19 WATERS "taxpayers are very, very upset about banks borrowing....without loans...etc" The CEOs countered that they are putting the bailout funds to work. Several saying they were basically forced by the Bush administration to take the money, whether they wanted it or not. (GRAPHIC Jamie Dimon, CEO, JPMorgan Chase & Co.) At 10:34 "didn't week tarp funds, but putting it to work. or lending aggressively" at 10:36) (GRAPHIC Vikram Pandit, CEO, Citigroup) At 10:56 "American people are right to expect proper use of TARP funds" (BRIDGE/standup)... And this letter sent to the Committee from New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo lays out new details about 3.6 billion dollars in bonuses given to Merrill Lynch executives before the merger with Bank of America. CEO Ken Lewis says it was out of his hands. (GRAPHIC Ken Lewis, chairman and CEO, Bank of America) (At 11:48.....they were a separate company before the merger) Public distrust of the bailout is now a major challenge facing the new administration as well as Congress....as all sides look to jump start the economy...while nursing the banking industry back to health.
