Byurakan Radio-Optical Telescope is one of the most significant scientific installations in Armenia. It is located near the village of Orgov in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia. The telescope is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level. The telescope has a diameter of 54 meters, making it one of the largest radio telescopes in the world. The telescope was constructed between 1981 and 1985 during the Soviet era. The telescope was the first of its kind in the USSR and the third-largest in the world at the time of its construction. The telescope features a unique "ring focus" design, which is a type of parabolic reflector used in radio telescopes to correct the spherical aberration that a simple parabolic reflector would suffer. It's been used to study pulsars, active galactic nuclei, and other radio sources, as well as for VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) observations. In 2016, it was announced that the telescope would be upgraded and modernized by the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory and the Armenian government. The telescope is often used in collaboration with other telescopes around the world for more comprehensive observations.
