In a chiller system, Delta T (ΔT) refers to the difference in temperature between the water entering and leaving the chiller. This temperature differential is a critical performance indicator for the chiller’s efficiency. ΔT is calculated by subtracting the temperature of the chilled water returning to the chiller from the temperature of the water leaving the chiller. The purpose of Delta T in a chiller is to gauge the cooling effectiveness. A higher ΔT typically means the chiller is efficiently removing heat from the water, as it’s cooling the water significantly as it passes through. If the ΔT is too low, it indicates that the chiller may be undersized, improperly functioning, or that there is a load imbalance.
