The words to "Can She excuse my wrongs" have been attributed to Robert Devereux (1565–1601), 2nd Earl of Essex - the tune is also known as an instrumental composition "The Earl of Essex Galliard". In the song, the poet can be interpreted to make references to his relationship with Elizabeth I, feeling jilted, jealous, spiteful and resentful for having been put aside, despite his high ambitions towards their future. Resentment never gets you anything good, and in the end she could not excuse his wrongs and our unhappy Earl was executed for treason. Performed by OPHELIA - Sanna Kola, mezzo soprano (sung in Original Pronunciation) & Tuomas Kourula, archlute Video was shot in the 17th century manor house Louhisaari in Askainen, Finland. We thank The National Museum of Finland for the unique opportunity.
