16th and Philly depicts the rise and fall of one of the nation's renowned playground basketball leagues held at the intersection of 16th Street and Susquehanna Avenue in North Philadelphia. From the late 1980's into the early 2000's, "16th Street" was the paramount league in Philadelphia, regularly compared to New York City's famed "Rucker Park." Many future greats frequented the league throughout its three reigning decades, including Wilt Chamberlain, Hank Gathers, and Doug Overton. However, three in particular became legends: Rodney "Hotrod" Odrick, Aaron "AO" Owens, and Bryant "Sadeye" Watson. The documentary features interviews with Odrick and Owens, as well as other league legends and Philadelphia basketball historians, including Littel Vaughn, Joe Parham, Dave "Dr. Foot" Scheiner, Mike Morak, and Rahim Thompson. Riddled with economic despair and devastating conditions, 16th Street playground was a beacon of hope for the North Philadelphia community, as well as the city at large. Games drew fans from across Philadelphia and the tri-state area to witness a level of competition unrivaled by any other league. The league at 16th Street shaped Philadelphia’s history forever, with its home-grown legends paving the way for the new stars of today.
