Learning at school could be made a lot more compelling with the intelligent use of games including board games and role playing. Jakub Valach, born 2006 in Prague, would not say that he has had a particularly difficult life. Raised by two – and subsequently four – loving parents, he counts himself very lucky to have had the privileges he did (and does). Among them, he values highly his opportunity to experience three very distinct styles of education, ranging from outdated to highly progressive. This helped kickstart his long-term interest in what is taught, and how. At present, his ‘professional’ interests gravitate towards sociology and other humanities and in his free time he indulges in dancing, reading and board games. He has always enjoyed sharpening his critical thinking and creativity through various questions, such as: what are the possible applications of games in education, or, where was Gondor when the Westfold fell? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
