In this lecture, the gross anatomical features of the pons are explored using high-resolution cadaveric images, offering students a clear visual understanding of its surface anatomy and landmarks. The anterior (ventral) aspect of the pons is characterized by a broad, convex bulge caused by the accumulation of descending corticospinal and corticobulbar fibers, as well as transverse pontocerebellar fibers that project into the middle cerebellar peduncles. A notable midline groove, the basilar sulcus, houses the basilar artery, an important vascular structure supplying the brainstem. The lecture also includes a detailed cross-sectional analysis of the pons, focusing on both the basilar part (ventral) and the pontine tegmentum (dorsal). At the level of the facial colliculus, the section shows the decussation of pontocerebellar fibers, longitudinally oriented corticospinal tracts, medial lemniscus, and spinothalamic tracts. The tegmentum is richly packed with nuclei, including the abducens nucleus (CN VI) and facial nerve fibers (CN VII) looping around it — forming the classic internal genu, a clinically significant landmark. Also visible are the trigeminal motor and principal sensory nuclei (CN V), and components of the reticular formation involved in consciousness and autonomic control. This session does not cover clinical anatomy, but is focused on giving first-year MBBS students and exam-focused learners a crystal-clear understanding of the internal structure of the pons using authentic cadaveric sections, with comparative annotations from histological diagrams and textbooks like Snell, BD Chaurasia, and Neuroanatomy by Vishram Singh.
