The Russians were about to invade Prague and my parents (foot jugglers) had a contract in " The Red Rose “, a international variety club inside Europa center . The place still exists , it’s an Irish Pub now . In August , with the invasion , there was indeed a lockdown , you could not go in or out of Berlin for maybe two weeks . Nobody seemed to know what was going to happen. Life went on … On Sundays , when we didn’t rehearse , the family would go for excursions around town , East and West ( as foreign tourists we could visit the “other side” for a day) . My brother Leo was holding the camera most of the time . The film shows the camping ground in the english sector of Spandau where we were staying in a caravan right along the outside wall, actually a fence there , with a huge no man’s land . It inclosed Berlin, which was also split across the middle of course by that concrete thing you all know.
