Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Bluetooth Device Helped Catch Culprit | ISH News

On 9th August 2024, a shocking incident took place at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A young trainee doctor, who was a second-year postgraduate student in the chest medicine department, was found dead in the seminar hall. The incident has sent shockwaves across the country, leading to widespread protests demanding justice. The victim, who was on duty on the night of 8th August, had dinner with her juniors around 2 AM. After the meal, she stayed in the seminar room to continue her studies while her colleagues left. She was last seen sleeping in the room at around 3 AM. Tragically, her lifeless body was discovered by her colleagues at 7:30 AM. The initial autopsy revealed that the trainee doctor was brutally murdered after being sexually assaulted. The report mentioned severe injuries, including bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, along with injuries to her face, neck, and other body parts. The crime is believed to have occurred between 3-6 AM, and the autopsy confirmed that she was strangled and then smothered to death. The police quickly launched an investigation and arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, on 10th August. Roy was caught after investigators found a pair of Bluetooth earphones at the crime scene, which were linked to him through CCTV footage. The footage showed Roy entering the emergency building at 4 AM with the earphones, which were later missing when he left 40 minutes later. Roy has confessed to the crime, according to police sources. He was charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and was remanded to police custody until 23rd August. This horrific incident has led to massive protests, not only in West Bengal but across the country. Medical students and doctors at RG Kar Medical College are demanding better security on campus, accusing the hospital administration of ignoring their repeated requests for enhanced safety measures. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the authorities, demanding a swift investigation and threatening nationwide protests if the culprits are not brought to justice. The West Bengal government has removed the hospital's Superintendent, Sanjay Vashisth, in response to the incident. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has promised swift justice, stating that the case will be tried in a fast-track court, and she has vowed to seek the death penalty for the perpetrator. She has also indicated that her government will not object to a CBI investigation if requested by the victim’s family. As the protests continue, medical services at the hospital have been severely affected, causing immense difficulties for patients. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association of India (FORDA) has called for a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals on 12th August in solidarity with the ongoing strike. The tragic death of the trainee doctor has raised serious concerns about the safety and working conditions of medical professionals in the country.
