According to the CDC, infertility is defined as generally not being able to get pregnant after one year of trying to conceive. However, a new a definition was released earlier this month by the medical group, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. The new definition states infertility as "a disease, condition or status characterized by any of the following... including the inability to achieve a successful pregnancy based on a patient's medical, sexual, and reproductive history, age, physical findings, diagnostic testing, or any combination of those factors." Research Associate at the Heritage Foundation's DeVos Center for Life, Religion and Family, Emma Waters, joins to talk to us more about this new definition of infertility, why redefine it and why now. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine the revised definition in part "reflects that all persons, regardless of marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity, deserve equal access to reproductive medicine." Waters helps us unpack this. Infertility can cause a great deal of pain for a married man and wife trying to start a family or add to it. Waters discusses the impact redefining infertility has on the natural family. She shares what she thinks this signals to women specifically and whether the redefinition distorts the God given gift of motherhood. ------------ EWTN News Nightly provides the latest news and analysis from a Catholic perspective.
