Mangoes are arguably the most consumed fruit in the world and on June 13, 2019, Jamaica exported 12,000 pounds of the ‘stone fruit’. Consisting of ‘Julie’ and ‘East Indian’, the mangoes are the first set to be exported to the US in 20 years. Its export is being made possible under the Mango Irradiation Programme and is expected to continue once or twice per week until the close of mango season in late July 2019. Under the programme, the Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry works with the United States Department of Agriculture-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (USDA-APHIS) to ensure compliance with the US import requirements, which stipulate that mangoes be treated by irradiation or hot water emersion, prior to being brought in. During the launch, Minister without Portfolio in the Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. J.C. Hutchinson, pointed out that the demand for Jamaican mangoes is high in the diaspora. In today's Agrobuzz, Jordan Dawson, Owner/Managing Director of Dawson Trading Company tells us about his experiences in exporting local mangoes around the world.
