Webinar Replay « Low carbon shipping: the role of bioenergy to attain net-zero (part 1)», Tuesday 23rd March 2021 during Bio360 Week 2021. The shipping sector is making a concerted and co-ordinated effort to tackle its carbon footprint which currently stands at between 2.5-3% of global CO2 emissions. The IMO has set the target of reducing CO2 emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. Efforts within the industry indicate that there is a demand driven appetite to go beyond this and a number of different fuel pathways to attaining net-zero open to shipping are being actively explored and trialed. These include biofuels (biodiesel, lignin fuels), bio/e-methanol, biolng, green ammonia, e-fuels, hydrogen and each comes with its own mix of advantages and challenges. Underpinning this development are innovative collaborations that are forming to between the uptakers (shipping companies), technology innovators, feedstock suppliers and other related stakeholders keen to see shipping decarbonise in the shortest possible time span. We take a closer look at some of these available routes to decarbonise shipping and the role bioenergy can play in moving towards the ultimate goal of net-Zero.
