Joe Broom -- Infinite Escape -- euphonium solo - with Caryl Conger on piano International Euphonium & Tuba Festival -- June 2014 *More info. below* This is a great new piece for euphonium that is also accessible to performers. Gulino's piece begins with a calm, yet powerful piano solo and then proceeds into a fast theme that reminds me of rock and roll. From there, the euphonium plays a cadenza that flows directly into a slow and jovial theme that ends the piece. The piece ends with a slower and contemplative finale and feels like an escape. writing © 2014 Joe Broom Gifted composer Frank Gulino was kind enough to provide the following notes and information about Infinite Escape: "Although there aren't any official program notes for "Infinite Escape," the piece does have a bit of an interesting backstory. In 2011, I was approached by the then-newly formed www.EuphoniumCommissions.org repertoire consortium and asked whether I would be interested in composing that group's inaugural commission project. I was flattered by the opportunity and immediately expressed my interest in writing the piece despite the fact that I had done little writing for solo euphonium at that point. As I started to think about how I was going to approach this particular piece, it occurred to me that I wanted to write something that really took advantage of the euphonium's unique characteristics but was also stylistically consistent with the rest of my catalog in terms of my use of traditional notions of melody and harmony, as well as the use of a variety of styles and tempi. I had already written a lot of solo trombone music, and I wanted to avoid having this project feel like just another trombone piece with the word "euphonium" slapped on the part. The euphonium sound has a wonderful, singing quality to it. In the hands of a talented player, it is probably the singular most capable brass instrument in terms of range and velocity. I wanted to leverage all of those characteristics, and sought to do so in "Infinite Escape" by utilizing the entire range of the instrument, writing in styles that vary from quick and aggressive to slow and lyrical, and incorporating technical demands that indicate that the piece was written with the euphonium in mind. International euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead gave the world premiere of "Infinite Escape" in July of 2012, and it has remained one of the most popular pieces in my catalog since that time. Steve, who gave the world premiere of my piece "Tornado" in Estonia back in 2010, happened to be scheduled to give a recital at the University of Arizona about a month after "Infinite Escape" was finished. Although I expected his program to have been completely finalized already, I reached out and asked if he would perhaps be interested in performing the piece on a later concert. To my surprise and delight, Steve put it on the program in Arizona, and "Infinite Escape" received its world premiere just a few short weeks after the final notes were written. It has been a wonderful thing to see this piece cropping up on euphonium recital programs around the country, and I hope everyone is having as much fun performing it as I had writing it!"
