Republished: July 3, 2018 Original Publication: August 27, 2013 Bathtub refinishers, both professional and do-it-yourselfers, despite warning not to, use products containing methylene chloride to remove the bathtub finish. Methylene chloride is a toxic, cancer-causing chemical that is absorbed by breathing it into your lungs or when it gets on your skin. This video explains the events that led to a professional bathtub refinisher’s death while using methylene chloride to strip an apartment bathtub. Photographs from the fatality investigation are supplemented by photographs of over-the-counter stripping agents containing methylene chloride and alternative stripping agents that do not contain methylene chloride. Work practice recommendations, including ventilation and personal protective equipment are highlighted. Bathtub refinishing companies are encouraged to include this video as part of a comprehensive safety training program (English, 7.5 minutes). The video was produced by the Michigan Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) program (https://oem.msu.edu/index.php/work-re...) in the Michigan State University Department of Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Medicine Division.
