(1 Feb 2015) Thousands of Ukrainians have fled the town of Debaltseve and found refuge in government shelters. A popular Soviet-era holiday resort in the sleepy town of Svyatorhisk is housing hundreds of displaced people from across eastern Ukraine, including dozens of recent arrivals from Debaltseve. Fourteen-year-old Nastya Mamonova, described the town she left behind: "It (Debaltseve) is a ghost town, there is no power. Nothing is left. It is just a black hole. They destroyed everything, all the homes. Small children have been left without parents. What is happening is terrible. The whole world needs to know about what is happening." Sixty-three-year-old pensioner Galina Maksimenko said she had begged her daughter-in-law to flee with her and her grandchildren, but her daughter-in-law refused. "So my husband grabbed my coat and that of one my granddaughters and shut us out in the street. And then he shouted, 'Save this one. If they do not want to be saved, save at least one of them'," Maksimenko said. The Deputy Chairman of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Vasily Stayetsky, said 12 people had been killed in Debaltseve on Saturday and several wounded during evacuations on Sunday. "Every day there are direct strikes by the terrorists. Every day civilians die in one city or another," Stayetsky said.
