Bush, met with French President Jacques Chirac in Paris on Monday before attending a ceremony at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The US first lady is in Paris to deliver the keynote speech at UNESCO, which the United States is re-joining after a 19 year absence. U-S president George W. Bush announced a year ago, before the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, that the US would rejoin UNESCO - a group America once considered corrupt and anti-Western. Formed in 1945 to promote international exchanges, UNESCO helps modernise education systems, establish standards on bioethics and preserve cultural and natural treasures. Recently, UNESCO has helped reopen schools and establish newspapers in post-Taliban Afghanistan, and worked in postwar Iraq to recover looted artifacts. Laura Bush arrived on Sunday night in what she called "one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world." She already signed on in February to be UNESCO's honorary ambassador for the UN Decade of Literacy, an effort that aims to help 860 (m) million adults and 113 (m) million children.
