In "Take This Hammer," James Baldwin travels to different San Francisco neighborhoods and engages in candid conversations about gentrification, housing and racism in this landmark 1964 documentary. Escorted by Youth For Service’s executive director, Orville Luster, Baldwin is intent on discovering “the real situation" for the city's Black community "as opposed to the image San Francisco would like to present.” This documentary was originally produced by KQED for NET, now The WNET Group. We are proud to present the full film as part of our ALL ARTS Vault Selects collection, a curated selection of enduring and essential public media programs.
