On the 5th September 2018, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers exercised its privilege of entering the City of London “with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed”. The name ‘Fusilier’ comes from an early form of musket called a ‘fusil’ which was issued to troops guarding the artillery during battle. This parade marked the 50th anniversary of the formation of the present regiment on 23rd April 1968 by the amalgamation of the four English fusilier regiments, the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, the Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers, the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) and the Lancashire Fusiliers. The parade was led by four Pioneers wearing white leather aprons and carrying the tools of their trade. In days gone by these men would have prepared the way for the troops to march and their position at the head of the regiment is preserved on ceremonial occasions such as this. Following the Pioneers came the Corps of Drums of the 1st Battalion and the Band of the Parachute Regiment. Also on parade were the Colours and members of the regiment. As the parade approached the City of London boundary in Byward Street it was halted and met by the City Marshal with his with sword drawn and mounted on his charger. After an exchange with the officer in charge he led the parade through the City. Led by the City Marshal as the Band plays the regimental march ‘The British Grenadiers’, the parade makes its way along King Street. 05 September 2018.
