8 OKTOBER 1973 Oliecrisis, CBS News, Walter Cronkite Higher prices for their oil Earlier, in the General Assembly, representatives of the warring countries, each blamed the other side for starting the fighting. Some Middle Eastern experts think the primary purpose of the Egyptian-Syrian offensive is to create through war a solid Arab front that has proved elusive in diplomatic bargaining. And once such solidity was obtained, these experts believe, the Arabs would be in a position to use their oil to weaken European and American support for Israel. Today, as the war raged, six of the Persian Gulfs biggest oil-producing nations began scheduled talks in Vienna with representatives of western oil companies. Arabs at the meeting seemingly put the war aside and placed greater emphasis on the planned agenda item, higher prices for their oil. The meeting lasted only 90 minutes and will resume tomorrow.
