There are few adventures in the lower 48 that provide access to pure rugged wilderness as a hike across Isle Royale National Park. A hike on the Greenstone Ridge Trail will test the aptitude of many hikers, but if you wanna really test your grit, there's few better ways than a hike on Isle Royale's Minong Ridge Trail. The National Park Service reports that Isle Royale is the least visited of our national parks. While this statistic may place the park in a sacred realm, it is equally impressive that the park service says that it is also the most "revisited" of our national parks. The few folks that come to Isle Royale keep coming back. Many of them return again, and again, and again. It's that cool. I am fortunate enough to county myself among those who have visited the park on more than one occasion, and I intend to return again. During my first visit in 2017, I took the Voyager II from Grand Portage, Minnesota to Windigo and hiked the Greenstone Ridge Trail over to Rock Harbor. This trip was indeed a test in fortitude, as it rained nearly the entire time, and the bugs were not nice to me at all. Somehow, I felt a strange desire to return to Isle Royale in order to hike the more remote Minong Ridge Trail. So in the summer of 2019, I once again headed for Grand Portage and made the journey to Windigo, with my sights set on the rugged northern route, which at times seems more like a route than a trail. After logging more than 50 miles of fabulous hiking in a land that guarantees wilderness solitude, I arrived at Scoville Point. The weather was perfect and not a drop of rain fell on my tent the entire time. Quite a contrast from my previous trip, during which I wrung water from my tent both during the morning teardown, and somehow during my evening setup... Isle Royale National Park offers some of the most rugged adventure in the lower 48. This place is desolate and wild, and here you will hike endless miles with not many souls in sight. This is a special place.
