Stemness vs. Pluripotency – Definitions and Methods to Verify
In this educational video, Tenielle Ludwig, Director of the WiCell Stem Cell Bank, defines pluripotent stem cell nomenclature for stemness versus pluripotency. While often used synonymously by researchers and within scientific publications, a cell that expresses stemness markers (i.e, SSEA-4 and TRA-1-60) is not definitively pluripotent. Pluripotency can only be confirmed through functional differentiation into the 3 germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm). Dr. Ludwig discuss how consistent use of this nomenclature can positively impact the field of pluripotent stem cell research. This video was recorded at the 2020 Stem Cell COREdinates Roundtable Meeting at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California.
